How Invisalign Works

From your first visit to your final result, here is a step-by-step look at the Invisalign process at Harrisonburg Dentist.

Invisalign treatment at our Harrisonburg practice blends modern digital imaging with the doctoral-level orthodontic expertise of lead dentist Dr. Kevin Hu, whose PhD in Orthodontics centered on the science of tooth movement. As a Platinum Invisalign Provider practice, we pair that depth of training with proven technology. Instead of metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to guide your teeth into place, discreetly and comfortably.

Whether you are straightening your smile before a big day, correcting a bite issue that has bothered you for years, or finally fixing the crowding you first noticed as a teen, the process below stays the same. Every Invisalign case here on Medical Avenue starts with a conversation and ends with a smile you will be glad to share across the Shenandoah Valley.

The 7-Step Invisalign Process

1

Your Free Consultation

Your Invisalign journey starts with a relaxed, unhurried visit at our Medical Avenue office. Dr. Kevin Hu takes a careful look at your smile, listens to what you want to change, and helps you decide whether Invisalign is the right fit. Because our practice is a Platinum Invisalign Provider and Dr. Hu holds doctoral-level training in orthodontics and the science of tooth movement, your plan can range from simple spacing to more involved bite alignment.

2

Your iTero 3D Digital Scan

No goopy molds here. We capture your teeth in just a few minutes with the iTero scanner, a small wand that builds a precise 3D model of your smile right on the screen. You even get to see a preview of your projected result before you commit to treatment.

3

Your Custom Aligners Are Made

Your scan goes to the Invisalign lab, where a custom series of smooth SmartTrack aligners is made specifically for your teeth. Each set is designed to move your teeth a little at a time, following the treatment plan Dr. Hu maps out for you.

4

Wearing Your Aligners

You wear each set of aligners about 20 to 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, drink anything other than water, brush, and floss. Wearing them consistently is the single most important thing you can do to stay on schedule, because the aligners only work while they are in.

5

Switching Sets Every One to Two Weeks

As your teeth shift, you move on to the next aligner in the series every one to two weeks. You will stop by our Harrisonburg office every six to eight weeks for short, friendly check-ins so we can track your progress and hand you the next batch.

6

Refinement If You Need It

At the end of your first aligner series, Dr. Hu takes a careful look at your result. If a few final tweaks would help, refinement aligners can be ordered to perfect the details. This is a normal part of many Invisalign cases and is usually included in your treatment fee.

7

Retainers to Protect Your New Smile

Once your active treatment wraps up, you move to retainers to hold your new smile in place for the long haul. Wearing them as directed is how your result stays looking the way it does on the day you finish.

How Long Your Treatment Takes

Most Invisalign cases at our Harrisonburg office finish in 12 to 18 months, though simple cases can wrap up in as little as six. Your exact timeline depends on the complexity of your case and how consistently you wear your aligners. Dr. Hu will give you a realistic estimate at your consultation, reading your iTero scan and treatment preview through the lens of doctoral-level training in the science of tooth movement, with no guessing and no surprises.

What Invisalign Can and Cannot Fix

Clear aligners handle the everyday concerns that bring most people in: crowded teeth that overlap and trap food, gaps you wish were closed, teeth that have shifted over the years, and many common bite problems where the upper and lower teeth do not meet the way they should. For these cases, Invisalign moves teeth as predictably as braces while staying nearly invisible. A small number of more complex situations, such as severe bite discrepancies or teeth that need to be rotated dramatically, may still call for braces or a combined approach. The only way to know for certain is an in-person look, which is exactly what your free consultation is for.

Living With Your Aligners Day to Day

Invisalign fits into a normal life with very little fuss. You take the trays out to eat, so there are no food restrictions to memorize and no brackets to clean around. Rinse your aligners whenever you take them out, brush and floss before you put them back in, and clean the trays gently with a soft brush and lukewarm water. Keep the protective case in your bag, because the most common way people lose an aligner is wrapping it in a napkin at a restaurant. If you play sports, you can leave the aligners in for most activities, and your dentist can advise you on a mouth guard for contact sports.

How We Keep It Comfortable

Comfort here comes from time and clear communication, not shortcuts. Dr. Hu explains each stage before it happens, so you always know what to expect and why. New aligners can feel snug for a day or two, and switching to the next set in the evening means you sleep through the firmest part of the adjustment. Your check-ins are short and friendly, and you are always welcome to call our Medical Avenue office between visits if a tray feels off or you have a question. There is never a rushed feeling, and there is never any pressure.

Convenient for Harrisonburg and the Valley

Our office sits at 1947 Medical Avenue, in the Sentara RMH medical corridor, which keeps your Invisalign check-ins easy to fit around work, school, or errands around Rockingham County. Because the visits are brief and spaced six to eight weeks apart, treatment rarely disrupts a busy schedule. From your first scan to your final retainer, your whole Invisalign journey stays right here in Harrisonburg with Dr. Hu.

Common Questions

Does wearing Invisalign hurt?

Most people feel gentle pressure for a day or two when they switch to a new set, which means your teeth are moving as they should. Invisalign has no brackets or wires to scrape your cheeks, so it tends to feel easier than braces. We smooth any rough tray edge.

How many hours a day do I really have to wear my aligners?

Plan on 20 to 22 hours a day. Take your aligners out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush and floss. The trays only move teeth while they are in, so consistent wear is the biggest thing within your control. Skipping long stretches sets you behind.

Can I eat and drink with my aligners in?

Take your aligners out to eat any food and to drink anything other than plain water. Hot drinks can warp the plastic, and colored drinks like coffee or wine can stain it. The upside is no food restrictions at all. Remove the trays, eat, brush, and reinsert.

How is Invisalign different from cheaper mail-order aligners?

Mail-order kits skip the in-person exam and supervision. On Medical Avenue, Dr. Kevin Hu examines your teeth, gums, and bite, takes a precise iTero scan, and tracks progress at short check-ins. A dentist with doctoral-level orthodontic training watching the whole time protects your oral health.

Do I have to wear a retainer after Invisalign?

Yes. Teeth drift back toward their old position if nothing holds them, so a retainer protects the result you worked for. We fit you for retainers when active treatment finishes and explain how often to wear them. Most patients wear them full time briefly, then nights only long term.
