Welcome to Harrisonburg Dentist
Visiting a new dentist can feel stressful, especially if it has been a while since your last checkup. Your first visit here has a simple goal: to get you comfortable, understand what you want for your smile, and give you a complete picture of your oral health, with zero judgment and no rushed sales pitch. Most new patient appointments run about 75 to 90 unhurried minutes, so you can relax and take your time.
You will be in good company. We see neighbors from every corner of Rockingham County and the Shenandoah Valley: longtime Harrisonburg residents, JMU students and faculty, Sentara RMH hospital staff, and families from Bridgewater, Elkton, Dayton, Broadway, Mt. Crawford, and beyond. Whether you are new to the area and want to transfer records from a previous dentist, or you are coming back to the chair after a long absence, you are welcome here.
What Happens at Your First Appointment
Arrival and Welcome
When you walk into our office at 1947 Medical Ave, Suite A, right in the Sentara RMH medical corridor, our front desk team greets you by name. There is coffee, water, and a comfortable waiting area. Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so we can verify your insurance and get you settled.
Your Paperwork and Health History
If you filled out our online registration through the Denticon portal ahead of time, your forms are already waiting in our system, no clipboard, no rush. If not, you will receive a simple health history, insurance, and consent packet at the front desk. Your health history matters: medications, allergies, heart conditions, and pregnancy can all shape how your care is planned, so please be thorough.
Gentle Digital X-Rays
One of our hygienists walks you back to a treatment room and takes a full set of gentle digital X-rays, up to 90% less radiation than old-school film, with images up on your chairside monitor in seconds. For implant, extraction, or orthodontic consultations, you may also get a 3D CBCT scan so your dentist can plan precisely.
Your Comprehensive Exam
Next, your dentist gives you a full comprehensive exam, charting every tooth, checking existing restorations, measuring gum pocket depth, screening for oral cancer, evaluating your bite, and assessing your TMJ. We use magnification loupes with LED illumination so the smallest issues get caught long before they turn into big ones.
Your Sit-Down Consultation
After the exam, you will sit down with your dentist, upright, not reclined in the chair, to walk through what was found. Your X-rays and intraoral photos go up on a large monitor so you see exactly what we see. You will have plenty of time to ask questions, and you will never be pressured to make same-day decisions about elective care.
Your Custom Treatment Plan
Finally, our treatment coordinator prepares a written treatment plan with fees, insurance estimates, and priorities. Your care is sorted into urgent (needs to happen now), recommended (needs to happen soon), and elective (cosmetic, scheduled at your convenience) so you always know what matters most. You leave with a clear path forward and no surprises on the bill.
